The 30-Second Storytelling Masterclass
The one sentence behind The Social Netwrok, Moneyball, and A Few Good Men
The secret behind great storytelling?
One sentence.
This one sentence was the guiding principle Aaron Sorkin used to craft award-winning movies like:
The Social Network
A Few Good Men
Moneyball
And it’s this:
"I worship at the altar of intention and obstacle."
Think about it.
Every great story boils down to two things:
Intention: What does the protagonist want?
Obstacle: What stands in their way?
Take The Social Network, for example.
Mark Zuckerberg’s intention?
To build the most influential social platform ever.
His obstacle?
Lawsuits, betrayal (well… it’s debatable), and the very people who helped him build it.
But within that larger narrative are smaller stories that mirror the same principle.
For instance:
Eduardo Saverin’s intention is to secure his place in the company.
His obstacle?
Mark and Sean Parker pushing him out.
Or…
The Winklevoss twins.
Their intention is to protect their idea of Facebook.
Their obstacle?
Mark’s ruthless drive to outmaneuver them.
Each subplot adds depth and relatability to the larger narrative, keeping you emotionally hooked.
Now, you don’t need a Hollywood blockbuster to tell a compelling story.
Maybe your story is about landing your first client, launching a product, or overcoming self-doubt in your career.
Find relatable themes that resonate with your audience.
What’s the intention? What’s the obstacle?
Share that.
I’ll be adding a new section to my Story Crypt course to dive deeper into this concept and show you how to use it in your presentations, speeches, or even sales emails.
